Gi or No Gi BJJ: does it matter?
We constantly have questions to Karl and other coaches regarding whether or not to attend Gi classes
for those only wishing to compete in Mixed Martial Arts. There is much debate on this topic in the mixed
martial Arts forums, books, dvds, etc. We recommend that everyone starts training in the Gi classes.
Why? Because at the very beginning of practising BJJ, the differences between Gi and No Gi training within
the SBG approach are extremely small to the point that students opting out of gi-based classes are only
missing out on quality training. Gi training installs some basic principles relating to posture and neck
defense that are essential to the no gi game, both MMA and Submission Wrestling.
What other classes are available?
BJJ Manchester recommends all of the available classes at Straigh Blast Gym Manchester, such as
Mixed Martial Arts, Submission Wrestling, and Stand-Up Fighting(Boxing, Thai Boxing and Wrestling. For further information visit our main site at www.sbguk.co.uk
